This was me in July 2012 when i finished 4 months of training.

Since then I’ve stopped training weights, doing cheerleading instead. I’ve lost a lot of weight, but lost a lot of strength too. From being able to do 70kg on squats, I can only do 40kg now…

I’m starting up my 3 month training as it’s my summer holiday now and am thinking of starting up a fitness training blog…good idea? Show me you’re support and it shall be done. :)

My daughter wasn’t born into royalty, but she was born into a country where she can now vote, become a doctor, a pilot, an astronaut, or even President if she wants and that’s what really matters. I wanted her to know the value of these amazing women who had gone against everything so she can now have everything. We chose 5 women (five amazing and strong women), as it was her 5th birthday but there are thousands of unbelievable women (and girls) who have beat the odds and fought (and still fight) for their equal rights all over the world.

DECONSTRUCTING THE GRAND MASTER - ILLUSTRATION

‘Meisje Met Een Sigaret (Girl With a Cigarette)’

**these images are accompanied by an online animation which can be accessed through the following link

(simply search on your mobile device through your web browser)**

‘Meisje Met Een Sigaret’ is an interpretation of the famous ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ (Johannes Vermeer, c.1665) and various portraits depicting young and beautiful women, from the 1600’s to the 1800’s; which all portray an objective beauty expressed through a passive submission to the viewer.

Although the piece does not show immediate similarities visually, other than the pitch-black background and illuminated female figure, the piece strives to focus on the attitude of the subject; specifically her gaze and gesture. In many of the classic female portraits which portray beauty, there is a lack of identity and personality.

‘Meisje Met Een Sigaret (Girl With a Cigarette)’ gives the female figure a more aggressive attitude at which identity can be apparent through the way the female figure gazes at the viewer, re-instating her authority, and the way in which she holds herself expressing a bold, daring and quite audacious personality.

This piece focus’ on the power of the subject, in which the figure can no longer be objectified by the viewer submissively, rather the subject gains authority and power through activeness of attitude within gesture and gaze.

Final Exhibition

Here I brought together all my frames and considered a way to display it for my final exhibition. At first I thought to just project my animation onto the wall on a loop for viewers to watch. However I wanted to show my animation in a more detail way in which the viewer could experience the time spent and laborious work need to produce all the frames created.

Considering this I decided to print out all the frames individually, as shown in my animation, and display them one after the right order in the sequence. I gave the viewer a chance to see each image in detail as they are hand-drawn.

However, I didn’t leave it as that, I also produced a website in which the viewer can see the animation via web browser (which can be seen in the post above). This gave the viewer to ways of experiencing my final piece of work, the laborious 22 illustrations and the 33 second animation. So in a sense these is an opposition in the time frame of each display of the piece.

Final Animation

In Evaluation of this project I believe I have effectively represented classic portrait’s of women such as the ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ by deconstructing the themes of passive beauty, by giving the subject a strong and daring attitude. I really enjoyed creating this piece, as a hand-drawn animation is one of my favored subjects, also being inspired by Rachel Goodyear to use a simpler process gave me motivation to create it.

If I were to recreate this animation I would have given more time to producing the actual frames, producing more to create a longer animation. I may have also used a white background to contrast with the classic portraits to show more opposition and to make the figure stand out more rather than fading into the black.

Final Coloured Frames
Here, are my final frames. I printed out the scanned black-inked frames and coloured each frame individually with pro-markers and fine-liner pens. Again, I scanned each frame in ready to produce my final animation.

Colour Frames

The above are practice papers which I tested the use of colour, first choosing the colours using a colour palette to ensure consistency, using pro-markers and fine-liner pens.
